Training Treats 101: Small Rewards, Big Results

Whether you’re teaching a puppy to sit or polishing a recall at the beach, the right reward makes training easier for both of you. Here’s what makes a great training treat — and how to use it well.

Keep it small

A training session can mean dozens of rewards. Pieces about the size of a pea are plenty: your dog gets the taste and the praise, and you can keep going without overfeeding. Our Training Treats and Mini Deer Jerky Bites are cut small for exactly this reason.

Make it worth working for

Dogs work hardest for rewards they really love. Pure meat treats have a strong, savory smell that holds attention — especially outdoors, where there’s a lot competing for your dog’s nose.

Timing is everything

Reward within a second or two of the behavior you want, so your dog connects the two. Keep treats in a pouch or pocket so they’re always ready.

Balance the bowl

Treats add up. On heavy training days, trim a little from your dog’s regular meals, and ask your veterinarian if you’re unsure how much is right for your dog.
